Hey, I'm Cheryl
I understand the journey you’re on – the juggling act of building a career, taking care of yourself, and raising incredible kids – yet you never feel like you’re enough. Your teens don’t seem to have any concept for how much you give up for them. How much you want them to succeed and don’t want them to feel that they have to do it alone. But they’re just so frustrated that you even ask how they are. It’s like they really do hate you.
Teenagers don’t feel they are enough
Unfortunately, the thing they hate most often is themselves and they simmer in how nothing is going their way. They’re trying to navigate their transition into adulthood and don’t feel good enough. They judge everything in and around themselves and just want to feel that they are worth something. It seems harsh, I know, but being a teen isn’t easy.
They want to feel that they are doing something right and that often that means showing someone else that they’re wrong, even about the littlest thing. You get the brunt of it because you are their safe place and they know you will love them no matter what. Instead of thinking I’m not enough, replace that with, How can I show my teenager that they are enough. More on understanding your teenager in a previous post.
Instead of trying to force them to be nice, you can try getting out of their way and focus on the things you can control, like your career and your own well-being. But you still have those secret fears about your kids’ future and your role as a mom. I’ve been there too, so let’s look at the incredible life you are shaping for your children while being true to yourself, even though it may not feel like it.
Uphill both ways
Picture this: you’re hiking up a steep trail, just like the uphill journey of motherhood and your career. Every step you take is a lesson to your children. They’re learning the power of perseverance, the joy of conquering challenges, and the beauty of never giving up. Your actions are their inspiration, showing them that life is full of climbs and descents, and it’s how we navigate them that defines who we are.
You’re not alone in wondering if your choices might make your kids think you’re a “terrible mom.” But guess what? You’re showing them what it means to chase dreams. Your enthusiasm for your career and interests is shaping their view of possibilities. You’re demonstrating that pursuing what lights your soul on fire is not only acceptable but also essential for a fulfilling life. They’ll carry this wisdom with them, embracing their own passions someday.
Talk enough
As a mom of teenagers myself, I’ve discovered the power of communication. Chatting with your kids about your journey, your dreams, and your fears opens doors to understanding. Share your experiences – the ups and downs – and let them in on your personal growth. By doing so, you’re showing vulnerability, which in turn encourages them to embrace their own imperfections and grow from them.
Speaking of imperfections, remember that perfection isn’t the goal. It’s about providing your kids with a foundation of values, resilience, and adaptability. Life is unpredictable, and your ability to handle challenges and setbacks with grace is a lesson they won’t find in any textbook. You’re gifting them the skills to navigate whatever comes their way.
Riding the waves of uncertainty is similar to navigating the waters of motherhood. You’re not just building a career; you’re crafting a legacy of strength and determination. Your kids are observing how you take risks, learn from failures, and celebrate successes. They’re learning that life isn’t about avoiding failures but about bouncing back stronger.
How much is enough?
Now, let’s address the concern that your kids might feel neglected due to your busy schedule. Quality over quantity, right? Your dedication to your passions shows them that it’s possible to balance responsibilities while nurturing your own interests. Plus, the time you spend together becomes more meaningful. Engage in open conversations about how your work and interests enrich your life and how they’re intertwined with your love for them.
You’re teaching your kids to be independent thinkers, dream chasers, and go-getters. They see you prioritizing self-care and personal growth, and in turn, they’ll prioritize their well-being and aspirations. Your journey is their roadmap to embracing their uniqueness and living authentically.

Conclusion
In the grand adventure of life, the destination isn’t the only thing that matters – it’s the journey itself. Every step you take, every choice you make, resonates with your children. You’re sculpting a masterpiece of resilience, determination, and self-love. So embrace your passions, conquer your fears, and remember that your journey is the most valuable lesson you’re passing on.
Your kids are watching, learning, and growing, and they’re becoming extraordinary individuals, just like you. But they are impatient and taking it out on you, which makes you feel that your teenager hates you or that you’re not enough. Keep chasing your dreams, nurturing your interests, and inspiring them to create their own remarkable paths. You’re not just building a career; you’re building a legacy of love, strength, and boundless possibilities. Together, you’re shaping a future that’s bright, bold, and beautifully unique.
